Design Wall Monday and Next Door Neighbor

The block for today is Next Door Neighbor and it is an 8-inch block.  When I first looked at it this morning I thought, no big deal and figured it wouldn't take long to piece it...

I started out with white and two different blues, and about 10 minutes into it I was taking it apart and putting in some red.  There is so much going on with this block it just needed something brighter.  I love the star in it, and I love the sewing it together in three rows, the opposite of what a normal block would be.  Of course at this point I'm not quite sure what normal is anymore. :)  It is block number 37 of 366.

I also worked on my son's quilt for a while. I know the other day I said I wanted to do some mindless sewing, but what I realized is, this quilt is anything but mindless sewing.

I don't know about you, but I have a terrible time just randomly grabbing a fabric and sewing it to another fabric.  I once had a teacher who told us if we wanted a truly scrappy quilt we should throw all of our strips into a basket and not look when we take two strips out and just sew them together.  I tried that once. I made it through four strips, and I ended up spending a lot of time taking them apart.  I just couldn't do it.

I also realized I'm thinking about this quilt a lot, and I'm actually getting very excited about it.  I remember letting my son help me choose the fabrics for his quilt, and obviously he has a lot of blues and greens (which I think reminds him of summer vacation at the lake).  They are all fun fabrics, and I hope he will have many restful nights under them once they are completely sewn together.

Kristin, I've come to the same conclusion about random scraps. I find myself doing the very same thing. As hard as I try. I think it all works out in the end though. "Some prints and colors just don't go together, right!" What are you going to do with 366 blocks? Are they all at 8" to be in a single project?
